Dental Implant Surgery

A complete dental insurance resource covering policies, procedures and other treatments.

Figuring out whether or not dental implant surgery is right for you, can be a difficult decision.  This is a very expensive procedure, but it can also greatly benefit you by essentially providing you with a whole new tooth.  However, in most cases dental implant surgery isn’t covered by insurance, so you’ll be forced to commit to a payment plan with the dentist providing the service, or you’ll have to pay completely out of pocket.  This can be a hard decision, as it affects a little bit of every facet of your life, so it’s a major one that you shouldn’t take lightly.

Dental implant surgery essentially consists of installing a metal rod into the root of your tooth, so that you can completely replace a tooth within your mouth.  This way, you’ll be able to chew food, and brush your teeth normally, without the need for dentures of any kind.  But the process is difficult, and dental implant surgery can be extremely costly.  Plus, because dentures are a much cheaper alternative, most insurance companies won’t cover implants as they aren’t always necessary.  But there are still alternatives that you can find.

In most cases your dental implant surgery is going to cost in excess of $1,000 and sometimes $2,500 per tooth.  That is extremely costly for anyone, especially if you need a lot of work done.  For that reason, you’ll likely need some sort of alternative to pay for the work.  Most dentists feature payment plans, and you should be able to establish one with your care provider, so that you can pay for your work over time.  This way, you can have the implants you need installed now, and worry about the cost later.  But not every dentist provides this service.

For that reason, you may want to consider setting up your own payment plan through the use of a credit card.  So long as the operation won’t go over your limit, a credit card can be a fantastic alternative so that you can receive the dental implant surgery that you need.  A good strategy, is to open up a new credit card with a temporary 0% interest special offer.  Just make sure that you can pay off the cost of the operation before your 0% interest period is up, because those cards usually switch over to a fairly harsh interest rate over time.  This way you can ensure that you only have to pay for the operation, and you don’t have to worry about paying extra for having used a credit card.

Finally, just be prepared for what dental implant surgery entails.  This is a very invasive procedure, and will be quite painful to deal with after the surgery is over.  For the next few days your mouth will be very painful, and you’ll probably require the use of pain medication to help you throughout your day.  Plus, you won’t be able to chew food normally for a few weeks, so you’ll likely have to be put on a liquid diet.  These are two problems that either dentures or even veneers can solve, so you may want to consider your other options if dental implant surgery just doesn’t seem worth the hassle.
